Stomach surgery

The stomach is a bag like organ located on the left side of the upper abdomen. This is the largest part of our gastrointestinal tract. It works as a reservoir for the food as food reaches the end of the esophagus.

The stomach secretes acid and enzymes that digest food. Ridges of muscle tissue called rugae line the stomach. The stomach muscles contract periodically, churning food to enhance digestion. The pyloric sphincter is a muscular valve that opens to allow food to pass from the stomach to the small intestine.

  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD): When symptoms of reflux become bothersome or occur frequently, they’re called GERD. Infrequently, GERD can cause serious problems of the esophagus. Long-standing GERD can cause cancer of the esophagus.
  • Gastric ulcer (stomach ulcer): An erosion in the lining of the stomach, often causing pain and/or bleeding. Gastric ulcers are most often caused by NSAIDs or H. pylori infection. This ulcer if un treated can cause massive bleeding or hole in stomach and may require emergency surgery.
  • Gastritis: Inflammation of the stomach, often causing nausea and/or pain. Gastritis can be caused by alcohol, certain medications, H. pylori infection, or other factors.
  • Stomach cancer: Gastric cancer is not unusual in US. There are several risk factors to develop gastric cancer and smoking is considered as one of the highest risk factor.

Gastritis and gastric ulcer can be treated medically. If untreated they may need surgery. gastric cancer and other gastric tumors need surgery to remove it. Some of them can be done laparoscopically and some need open extensive surgery. Dr. Singh perform both laparoscopic and open gastric surgery.
