Gallstones are the most common cause of blocked bile ducts. Stones typically form inside the gallbladder and can block the common bile duct, a large tube at the base of the liver. If the duct remains blocked, it can growing of bacteria in bile and infection of gallbladder called as “gallbladder attack” or cholecystitis. Also, if bacteria above the blockage accumulates and backs up into the liver, it may cause a severe infection called ascending cholangitis.
Gallbladder can also develop cancer in it, but it is very rare. Treatment of gallbladder attack and gallstones is to remove the gallbladder. Dr Singh is a board certified general surgeon and can remove gallbladder most of the time laparoscopically. Sometime it has to be done as open gallbladder surgery, If gallbladder is severely infected or person is very sick and can not tolerate laparoscopic procedure.
