At Forsyth Surgical Associates, we offer a comprehensive and transparent approach to the management of pancreatic cancer whether it be surgical or medical. Pancreatic cancer is the seventh most common cause of death in the United States. It can originate from different types of cells in the pancreas. In addition, there are several different types of pancreatic tumors, some of them can turn into real pancreatic cancer, known as adenocarcinoma of the pancreas.
Pancreatic cancer surgery
Dr. Singh can perform different types of surgery for different locations of the tumor in the pancreas. It can be done laparoscopically or as an open surgery.
Whipple Procedure (Pancreaticoduodenectomy)
The Whipple procedure is one of the most complex abdominal surgeries. It involves resection of the head of the pancreas, bile duct, gallbladder, part of the small intestine, Duodenum, and a portion of the stomach. A free booklet about pancreatic cancer can be downloaded http://lustgarten.org/pancreaticcancerbasics from Lustgarten foundation. This is a very good book and all of my pancreatic cancer patients get a copy of this. This is all the way down at the bottom of the page and can be downloaded free as a PDF file. You may also order the book, or hard copy, through the site.
This is performed for very large locally advanced tumors in the body and tail of the pancreas.
Laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy
Dr. Singh can perform a distal pancreatectomy that can protect the spleen or with a splenectomy for pancreatic tumors.
This is performed when the disease is involving most of the pancreas.
